Codes effective October 2008
For this year there are two versions to choose from:
Codes with short descriptions

This set of codes and descriptions is distributed on behalf
of CMS specifically for use with MDS. The descriptions are
meant to be short enough to use on the paper forms. However,
they have sometimes been truncated to the point where the
user must resolve ambiguity by consulting another source.
Example:
171.0 MALIGNANT NEOPLASM OF CONNECTIVE
AND OTHER SOFT TI
171.2 MALIGNANT NEOPLASM OF CONNECTIVE AND OTHER SOFT TI
171.3 MALIGNANT NEOPLASM OF CONNECTIVE AND OTHER SOFT TI
171.4 MALIGNANT NEOPLASM OF CONNECTIVE AND OTHER SOFT TI
171.5 MALIGNANT NEOPLASM OF CONNECTIVE AND OTHER SOFT TI
171.6 MALIGNANT NEOPLASM OF CONNECTIVE AND OTHER SOFT TI
171.7 MALIGNANT NEOPLASM OF CONNECTIVE AND OTHER SOFT TI
This set should be adequate when the MDS user either is
given the code or uses another coding reference.

This set of codes and descriptions is specified for MDS
use by CMS' RAI manual. We at LSS hope that our customers
who choose to install this set will find the on-screen descriptions
more helpful. Example:
171 Malignant neoplasm of connective
and other soft tissue
171.0 Head, face, and neck
171.2 Upper limb, including shoulder
171.3 Lower limb, including hip
171.4 Thorax
171.5 Abdomen
171.6 Pelvis
171.7 Trunk, unspecified
171.8 Other specified sites of connective and other soft
tissue
171.9 Connective and other soft tissue, site unspecified
To determine a code from a description using this set,
the user might first search by description for, say, "Malignant
neoplasm", then, on determining that 171 is the appropriate
general code, search by code for "171".
